Electrocardioversion involves applying a brief electrical impulse to the heart to synchronize its electrical activity and restore its natural rhythm. The procedure is performed using a special device called a defibrillator, which adjusts the amount of current required.
To ensure patient comfort, the procedure is performed under light sedation (intravenous anesthesia), and healthcare professionals carefully monitor the patient’s vital signs.
You must not eat or drink for at least 6 hours before the procedure. According to the doctor’s instructions, additional preparation may be necessary to prevent the risk of blood clots, for example, a transesophageal echocardiogram may be necessary, which can be performed at the clinic.
