What is sleep polygraphy?

Bedside polygraphy, or the Sleep Disordered Breathing Test, is a sleep test used to assess and diagnose sleep-disordered breathing and to ensure that it is treated as accurately and effectively as possible.

When should I have a sleep study?

Overnight polygraphy is performed in patients with suspected:

obstructive sleep apnoea (intermittent upper airway collapsing during sleep; most common in overweight patients);
chest deformities, neuromuscular diseases, sleep-disordered breathing caused by heart failure;
restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorders (with additional sensors);
after surgery on the neck or tonsils of the palate to check the effectiveness of the treatment

How to prepare for a sleep study?

Avoid caffeinated drinks (tea, coffee, cola, energy drinks) on the day of the test, and do not drink alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test.
On the day of the examination, it is advisable not to sleep during the day as you may have difficulty falling asleep in the evening.
You should follow your normal sleep schedule so that the examination at night is as close as possible to your normal routine.
It is recommended to have a meal at least two hours before bedtime.

How does a sleep study work?

The clinic will be provided with equipment to perform sleep studies at home.
Clinic staff will demonstrate how the equipment is to be mounted on the body and give instructions to take away.
Body creams, lotions, perfumes and cosmetics should not be applied before bedtime as this may interfere with the attachment of the sensors.
Sensors should be attached to different parts of the body to measure and record different bodily functions – breathing, heart rate, body position, blood oxygen levels.
The environment must be kept quiet and dark to promote quality sleep.
In the morning, when you wake up, the sensors must be removed and the equipment returned to the clinic.

Receipt of results

The results of the sleep study and the doctor’s opinion can be obtained within 7 working days after the sleep study is completed.

What are the clinic opening hours?

The Skride Heart Clinic is open on weekdays from 8:00 to 20:00 and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 15:00.

Where is the clinic?

Skride Heart Clinic is located at 62 Krišjāņa Valdemāra Street, close to the Skanstes neighbourhood. The entrance to the clinic is on the side of the Aloja quarter/ courtyard.

How to get here?

The clinic is easily accessible by public and private transport.

The clinic can be easily reached by trolleybus 3 (3 minutes walk from the clinic on Krišjāņa Valdemāra iela, stop “Alojas iela”) and tram 11 (4 minutes walk from the clinic along Alojas iela towards Miera iela, stop “Dzemdību nams”).

Is free parking available for clinic clients?

Yes, for the convenience of the clinic’s clients, there is a Europark car park in the courtyard of the Aloja Quarter (at Kr. Valdemāra Street), where we provide free parking for clinic patients for up to 3 hours by registering your car number at the clinic reception.

Is there a place to leave children during the visit?

Yes, there is a children’s room in the clinic where young guests can spend time while they visit.

Is the clinic accessible?

The Skride Heart Clinic provides an accessible environment for all our patients and guests.

The interior of the clinic is easy to navigate for wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs – all entrance and exit doors are threshold-free and on the same level as the common areas, lift anteroom and corridor. The clinic also has toilets and showers that are adapted for people with reduced mobility.

People with reduced mobility can access the clinic premises via the main entrance of the building from Alojas Street. The clinic is located on the 2nd floor and can be accessed via one of the four passenger lifts in the building.

The clinic’s internal navigation system is also available in Braille.
