Veloergometry

What is a Veloergometry (VEM) test?

Veloergometry is a method of checking cardiovascular health under conditions of increasing exertion by recording an electrocardiogram. It is also known as an exercise test.

The test is prescribed to assess exercise tolerance, heart rate, arterial blood pressure and other exercise-related parameters. This also means if heart disease is suspected, especially coronary heart disease or angina. In heart disease patients, cycle ergometry can assess the effectiveness of treatment, exercise tolerance and risk factors.

The test is carried out using a bicycle ergometer – a bicycle-like device equipped with special hardware. The cycle ergometer records the electrocardiogram during exercise, measures arterial blood pressure, and monitors post-exercise changes – heart rhythm disturbances, stabilisation of arterial blood pressure and pulse, etc. etc.

The need for an examination is determined by the attending physician after assessing your overall health. The bicycle ergometry load test is not performed on patients weighing more than 120 kilograms and on children who cannot reach the pedals of a bicycle ergometer.
